Beyond Real Estate: Discovering Rolex’s New Perpetual Padellone and the Art of Luxury Watches

At first glance, real estate and luxury watches may seem like very different worlds. But both are highly personal purchases where craftsmanship, market knowledge, availability, and trusted guidance matter. A home reflects how you live, while a special timepiece often celebrates where you’ve been, or an important milestone along the way.

Hi, I’m Hunter Hoffman, a Realtor, watch enthusiast, and founder of The Test of Time Watch Co. I have the opportunity to help clients navigate both of these markets: finding the right home and finding a timepiece that feels distinctly their own.

Through my watch business, I help clients buy, sell, and source luxury watches while sharing the history and stories behind them. Whether you’re a longtime collector or simply curious, I hope this new monthly feature introduces you to something worth discovering, beginning with an unexpected release from Rolex.

Rolex usually saves its major announcements for Watches and Wonders, the annual watch fair in Geneva, Switzerland. But on September 15, the brand surprised enthusiasts with the Perpetual Padellone, a new addition to its lineup. For me, it’s a reminder that Rolex’s appeal goes beyond its famous sports watches: the brand also has a fascinating history of elegant, mechanically complex timepieces.

Although the model is new, its inspiration reaches back to the late 1940s. The original Rolex reference 8171, known to collectors as the “Padellone,” paired a complete calendar and a moonphase display. The new watch carries that spirit forward with familiar styling and modern engineering.

Its standout features are an annual calendar and a moonphase display, which tracks the Moon’s changing appearance. The calendar distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months, requiring correction only when February turns to March, provided the watch keeps running.

Inside is the new calibre 7190, developed from the movement introduced in the Land-Dweller in 2025. Its calendar indications advance instantaneously at midnight, with the month changing when appropriate. That may sound simple, but achieving it mechanically is part of what makes watches like this so fascinating.

The 39mm Padellone comes in three configurations: two in 18-karat Everose gold, with either a brown alligator strap or matching Settimo bracelet, and my personal favorite, platinum with an ice-blue dial and black alligator strap.

For a watch enthusiast like me, this announcement felt like an early Christmas present. Whether or not a Padellone ever finds its way onto my wrist, discovering a new Rolex and exploring the history behind it is part of the enjoyment of this hobby.

If you’d like to learn more about watches, or need help buying, selling, or finding a particular timepiece, I’d love to connect.
