The History of College Park

College Park’s story dates to the early 1920s. In 1924, developers began creating a residential community on land near Lake Ivanhoe, laying out streets named after colleges and universities, including Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale and Stetson. Those distinctive street names ultimately inspired the neighborhood’s name.

Many of College Park’s earliest homes were built in the Craftsman bungalow and Mediterranean Revival styles. Over time, the neighborhood expanded to include cottages, traditional residences, mid-century homes and newer infill construction. This mix of architectural periods gives College Park a layered streetscape that reflects approximately a century of Orlando’s growth.

Today, the neighborhood continues to balance preservation of its established character with thoughtful redevelopment and investment.

Life Along Edgewater Drive

Edgewater Drive is College Park’s primary commercial corridor and the center of its neighborhood activity. Often called “The Drive,” it is lined with independent restaurants, cafés, bakeries, boutiques, personal services and locally operated businesses.

Many businesses are located within or near the surrounding residential blocks, giving the district an interconnected neighborhood atmosphere. Albert Park, located directly on Edgewater Drive, provides a landscaped gathering space with a pavilion, stage, picnic tables and seating near the heart of the business district.

The City of Orlando has also planned improvements along Edgewater Drive intended to expand sidewalks, enhance pedestrian connections, improve accessibility and update landscaping and lighting throughout the corridor.

Lakes, Parks and Outdoor Recreation

College Park developed around a collection of lakes that remain an important part of its scenery and identity. These include Lake Adair, Lake Ivanhoe, Lake Concord and Lake Silver, along with several smaller bodies of water throughout the surrounding area.

Public recreation options include:

Albert Park, a community gathering space along Edgewater Drive with a pavilion, stage and picnic areas.

Dartmouth Park, a neighborhood park with open green space, a playground and picnic facilities.

College Park Neighborhood Center and Pool, which provide recreational facilities and scheduled community programming.

Lake Ivanhoe, located near the neighborhood’s eastern edge and surrounded by additional dining, recreation and cultural destinations.

The lakes, parks and mature tree canopy add natural scenery to an otherwise centrally located urban neighborhood.

College Park Events and Community Life

College Park hosts recurring events that highlight its local businesses, public spaces and neighborhood culture. College Park JazzFest has been held along Edgewater Drive since 2002, bringing live music to multiple outdoor stages. Additional events have included Holiday on the Drive, wine and beverage walks, seasonal celebrations and business-focused gatherings.

Event schedules and formats may change from year to year, so visitors should consult The Drive College Park’s official calendar for current information.
